1980 Belmore Boys High. In an effort to quell the racial and gang violence in this school,as it beat Redfern High for worst school in the state that year,the faculty decided to play radio during lunch-break.
2JJ was in its infancy and punk-rock was still an on going thing in Australia,with New Wave fast catching up.
The social experiment started as the speakers all around the school,hissed and crackled to life.No introduction,about four seconds of silence and the first bass lines come on cerebrally,summoning on the darkest vibrations.
The gangs all started shadow boxing,pulling knives,head high kicks,the music nearly invoked a riot.
I was with the only six white guys in my class,we played hand-ball for our lives,trying not to let the ball go into 'their' territory.
My introduction to Joy Division.
Had my head smashed in over a game of marbles.Remember that one.
