Secret Agent Man - Jocko Homo
Back in 1979,Campsie Australia,music videos weren't a real form of art.Sure there was great live videos and live studio types with Bowie,early Roxy music with Eno,Rolling Stones,but nothing of real entertainment.I was only nine in '79 and there were only two music programs I liked,excluding Donnie Sutherlands 'Sounds' on channel 7.Hated his show and Countdown's Molly Meldrum,it was all scripted and boring,although the ABC was soon to invent shows like Beatbox,Rage and Recovery which were excellent.
No the two shows I liked,was 'After Dark" the midnight closing show for channel 7 and a strange art show on what was to become SBS Television,before it was SBS,you had to tune it in on UHF 45 and the station only operated certain hours.The station was in it's infancy and very experimental,originating shows like Eat Carpet and Fat Pizza years later.VHS players were fairly new on the market and cost twice a second hand car,about $1000 for a good National player.Dad would always leave space at the end of tapes,this war film,Von Ryan's Express,so I filled it with music videos.
They were just finishing playing Bowie's Ziggy character live,I taped Changes and Oh ! You Pretty Things,then Bowie was in an interview how he and Brian Eno were working on this band from the States,DEVO and when Bowie Or Eno talked,I listened,if it wasn't for them,I would've ignored The Velvet Underground,the all time favourite band.
I was nine mind you.
My mind was blown.
These masked sinister men in over-alls,light blue safety hats.playing home-made synthetic drums.chop-down snarling guitars,intriguing lyrics about loosing your name and gaining a number,with chimpanzees paddling each others arses with ping pong bats....The music,the cool.It was overload.
Jocko Homo,an anthemic assault on modern life and the de-evolution of modern man's mind.This was the advent of the modern music video and Devo pioneered it.This was shot in 1975 and shown at an arts festival the year following.
It's still my most favourite music video to this day and a weekly watcher,four decades on. To me Devo were nerdy punks in their early years,1973-1979,a true guitar band,until the record companies corrupted their direction.Still,Mark did say something about the alternative being food stamps.
What really sucked was trying to get clear cut video versions of these two songs on LP or Cassette in the late 70's,you'd have to wait many more decades for The Devo Hardcore releases on CD.As you'll be introduced to what I mean here on the following page.

Downloaded this,converted to a WMA/MP3,play in your car at your own risk,the guitars at the intro as they wind up,before you know it,you're ripping along at 100 mph on a country road.
It's a sad song,when a guy in a relationship realizes his partner is horrible and unfaithful and can't escape the feelings of betrayal.
But a great guitar song.

Now I have been shot by UFO's with white light that left a rash on me for weeks.I chased an alien through a wall once,telepathically communicated with UFO's with my brother Shane strange psychic events.But instead of sticking around to try and talk with this creature,but it was eight to nine feet tall and felt intimidated.So I got out of there,lamenting the decision later,real angry at myself,still am.When I reached a high point on the hillside road,I looked back at the area where I came from and there was this little isolated spot,where the fog was.It was only in the area where I was,nowhere else was there fog.
But the strangest thing was... The next morning,I go into Wingham News agency to put on the Saturday night lotto and I give the owners an account of the night before.They didn't even act surprized,leaving me even more perplexed.
These little Australian towns have their secrets.Then I remembered my father laughing about UFO's...but never the Yowie or even occult groups.He's dead now and will always regret I never spoke to him more about his childhood.He was a bastard,but he knew things and I inherited that in spades from him.
Reality is not boring,there's so much out there yet to discover.
